Switzerland

Switzerland is a landlocked country in central Europe, bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. The capital is Bern, though Zurich is the largest city and financial centre. With a population of about 8.7-million, Switzerland operates as a federal republic comprising 26 cantons, each with considerable autonomy. The country maintains a policy of armed neutrality and is not a member of the European Union, though it participates in the Schengen Area and has extensive bilateral agreements with the bloc. Switzerland's economy is one of the world's most advanced and stable, characterised by a highly skilled workforce, low unemployment and a strong services sector. Key industries include banking and finance, pharmaceuticals, precision manufacturing, watchmaking and tourism. The Swiss franc (CHF) is the national currency and is regarded as a safe-haven asset in global markets. Switzerland is home to numerous international organisations, including the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, all headquartered in Geneva. The country ranks consistently high in global indices for quality of life, innovation and competitiveness. Switzerland has four official languages—German, French, Italian and Romansh—reflecting its diverse cultural regions. Its tradition of political stability, direct democracy through referendums and strict banking secrecy laws (though recently relaxed under international pressure) have long shaped its global reputation.
