Sutherland

Sutherland is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located in the Karoo region, approximately 370 km north-east of Cape Town. The town sits at an elevation of about 1 450 m above sea level and has a population of several thousand residents. Sutherland is best known as the home of the South African Astronomical Observatory, which operates several major telescopes in the area. The site hosts the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, along with other research instruments. The town's high altitude, clear skies, low light pollution and dry climate make it one of the premier astronomical observation sites in the world. Sutherland's economy is closely tied to astronomy and related scientific tourism, alongside traditional Karoo farming activities such as sheep farming. The town experiences extreme temperature variations, with cold winters that occasionally bring snow and hot summers. Sutherland was established in the nineteenth century as a farming settlement and named after a local landowner.
