Stats SA

Stats SA (Statistics South Africa) is the national statistical service of South Africa, responsible for collecting, producing and disseminating official statistics for the country. The organisation operates as an independent entity within the public administration, mandated to provide reliable data that informs government policy, business decisions and public debate. Its headquarters are located in Pretoria, and it reports to the Minister in the Presidency responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluation. Stats SA conducts a wide range of surveys and censuses covering demographics, economic activity, labour markets, agriculture, trade, prices and social conditions. Key outputs include the quarterly gross domestic product figures, monthly consumer price index, labour force surveys and the decennial national census. The organisation also produces sector-specific data such as agricultural production statistics, mining output and manufacturing performance indicators. Stats SA's work underpins evidence-based policymaking across government departments and provides essential market intelligence for the private sector. It collaborates with international statistical bodies to ensure methodological consistency and comparability. The agency was established in its current form following the Statistics Act of 1999, which consolidated South Africa's statistical functions and reinforced the principle of statistical independence.
