South African National Energy Development Institute

The South African National Energy Development Institute is a research and development organisation focused on energy technology and policy in South Africa. The institute operates within the country's energy sector, conducting research and providing technical expertise to support energy security, transition and development objectives. Its mandate encompasses a range of energy domains, including renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic systems, energy efficiency measures, hydrogen development, and emerging areas such as embedded generation and grid modernisation. The institute works to advance South Africa's energy transition by bridging research, policy formulation and practical implementation. It collaborates with government departments, industry stakeholders and international bodies such as the International Energy Agency to address challenges in electricity supply, electrification and the integration of new energy technologies. The organisation contributes technical analysis and capacity-building in areas critical to the country's energy future, including the role of nuclear power, natural gas, heat pumps and the energy demands of data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Its work supports sectors such as mining and manufacturing, which are significant energy consumers in the South African economy. The institute plays a role in shaping the national conversation on energy policy and in supporting the implementation of strategies to enhance energy security and sustainability.
