South African Local Government Association

The South African Local Government Association is the national representative body for South African municipalities, established to promote the interests of local government and enhance cooperative governance. The association represents all 257 municipalities across the country, including metropolitan, district and local municipalities, and serves as the voice of local government in national policy debates. It is recognised in the Constitution and the Organised Local Government Act as the official representative of organised local government in South Africa. The association's mandate includes advocating for the developmental and fiscal interests of municipalities, facilitating knowledge sharing and capacity building, and representing local government in intergovernmental forums such as the President's Coordinating Council and the Budget Forum. It plays a key role in negotiating with national government on issues affecting municipal finance, service delivery and governance. The association provides technical support to municipalities, develops policy positions on legislation affecting local government, and promotes best practice across the sector. It is governed by a national executive committee elected from among municipal councillors, with provincial structures coordinating regional interests. The association was formally established in 1997, replacing earlier local government representative bodies, and has since become a central institution in South Africa's system of cooperative governance.
