Seychelles

Seychelles is an archipelagic island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa, north-east of Madagascar. The capital and largest city is Victoria, situated on the main island of Mahé. The country has a population of about 100 000, making it the smallest sovereign state in Africa by population. Seychelles comprises 115 islands, with the economy heavily dependent on tourism and fisheries, which together account for the majority of GDP and employment. The country also operates a significant offshore financial services sector and ship registry. The currency is the Seychellois rupee. Seychelles is a republic with a presidential system of government and has been a member of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community and the Commonwealth of Nations. The nation has one of the highest per capita incomes in Africa, supported by its tourism industry, which attracts visitors to its beaches, coral reefs and nature reserves. Tuna fishing and canning are important economic activities, with the country's exclusive economic zone covering a vast area of ocean. Seychelles gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1976 and transitioned from one-party rule to multiparty democracy in the early 1990s. The country's small size and island geography make it vulnerable to climate change, particularly rising sea levels, which pose long-term challenges to its economy and infrastructure.
