Serbia

Serbia is a landlocked country in south-east Europe, situated in the central Balkans. The capital and largest city is Belgrade. Serbia has a population of about seven-million people and operates as a parliamentary republic. The country's economy is transitional, with key sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, energy and mining. Serbia is a candidate for membership of the European Union and participates in regional trade agreements. The official currency is the Serbian dinar. The country has significant mineral resources, including copper, gold, lithium and coal, which underpin an active mining sector. Major mining operations include the Bor copper complex and exploration projects targeting precious and base metals. Serbia's strategic location in the Balkans and its resource endowment make it a focus for international mining investment. The modern state of Serbia emerged following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and subsequent independence of Montenegro in 2006.
