SARS

SARS (South African Revenue Service) is the national tax authority of South Africa, responsible for the collection of revenue and the enforcement of tax and customs legislation. Established in 1997 as an autonomous agency under the South African Revenue Service Act, SARS operates under the oversight of the Minister of Finance. Its mandate includes the administration of income tax, value-added tax (VAT), customs duties, excise duties and other levies on behalf of the South African government. SARS is headquartered in Pretoria and maintains regional offices and border posts across the country. The organisation plays a central role in funding public services and infrastructure by ensuring compliance with tax laws and maximising revenue collection. SARS has increasingly focused on transfer pricing enforcement, particularly in sectors involving multinational corporations and cross-border transactions, such as mining and manufacturing. High-profile disputes have involved companies in the platinum and automotive supply industries. The agency has invested in modernising its systems and improving taxpayer services, while also combating tax evasion and illicit financial flows. SARS's effectiveness is closely watched as a barometer of South Africa's fiscal health and governance capacity.
