Saldanha Bay

Saldanha Bay is a port city on the west coast of South Africa, situated in the Western Cape province approximately 110 km north of Cape Town. The city takes its name from the natural deep-water bay around which it is built, one of the largest and safest natural harbours in the southern hemisphere. Saldanha Bay serves as a major industrial and logistics hub, with its economy centred on port operations, iron ore export, fishing, and increasingly mining-related activities. The Port of Saldanha is South Africa's largest and deepest natural port, handling significant volumes of bulk cargo, particularly iron ore shipped from the Northern Cape via the Sishen–Saldanha railway line. The city is also home to naval facilities and oil storage infrastructure. In recent years Saldanha Bay has attracted investment in phosphate mining and processing, leveraging its port infrastructure and proximity to mineral deposits in the Western Cape. The municipality has been designated as an industrial development zone to encourage manufacturing and beneficiation. Saldanha Bay's strategic location and port capacity make it a focal point for resource export and industrial development in the Western Cape. The city was formally established in the mid-twentieth century, though the bay itself has been used as a harbour since the colonial era.
