Romania

Romania is a country in South-Eastern Europe, bordered by Ukraine to the north, Moldova to the north-east, the Black Sea to the south-east, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the south-west and Hungary to the west. The capital and largest city is Bucharest. With a population of about 19-million people, Romania has a mixed economy that has transitioned from centrally planned to market-oriented since the fall of communism in 1989. Key economic sectors include manufacturing, agriculture, services and energy, with significant exports of machinery, vehicles, textiles and agricultural products. The country is rich in natural resources, including oil, natural gas, coal, iron ore and timber, and has substantial renewable-energy potential, particularly in wind and solar power. Romania's currency is the leu, and the government operates as a semi-presidential republic. The country joined the European Union in 2007 and is a member of NATO, the United Nations and other international organisations. Romania has been working to modernise its infrastructure and attract foreign investment, particularly in the energy and technology sectors. Historically, the modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through the union of Moldavia and Wallachia, gaining full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, and the current borders were largely established after the First World War.
