Rand Refinery

Rand Refinery is a precious metals refining company based in South Africa that specialises in the processing and refining of gold and other precious metals. Headquartered in Germiston, Gauteng, the refinery operates one of the largest integrated precious metals refining and smelting complexes in the world. The company is owned by the major South African gold mining houses and serves as a central refining facility for gold produced by mines across the country. Rand Refinery processes gold doré from mining operations, refining it to meet international standards including those set by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The facility produces a range of gold products including large gold bars, small bars and minted products such as the Krugerrand coin. Beyond South Africa, Rand Refinery has expanded its footprint into other African markets, providing refining services and technical expertise to support gold production across the continent. The company plays a significant role in the African precious metals value chain, offering services that include assaying, smelting and refining to mining companies and small-scale miners. Rand Refinery was established in 1920 to serve the needs of South Africa's burgeoning gold mining industry and has since grown to become a key player in the global precious metals refining sector.
