Procurement

Procurement is the strategic business process of acquiring goods, services, works and utilities that an organisation requires to operate, produce or deliver its outputs. It encompasses the full cycle from identifying needs and selecting suppliers through to negotiating contracts, placing orders, receiving deliveries and managing supplier relationships. The function sits at the intersection of finance, operations and supply chain management, balancing cost control with quality assurance and risk mitigation. Procurement professionals evaluate potential vendors, conduct competitive tendering processes, negotiate terms and pricing, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies. In manufacturing and logistics sectors, procurement plays a critical role in securing raw materials, components, equipment and services at optimal cost and quality levels. Effective procurement drives operational efficiency, reduces total cost of ownership and supports business continuity by maintaining reliable supply networks. The discipline has evolved from transactional purchasing to strategic sourcing, with modern procurement teams leveraging data analytics, supplier performance metrics and category management techniques. In South Africa and across the continent, procurement is also a key lever for advancing transformation objectives, local content requirements and supplier development programmes. The function is supported by professional bodies and standards that promote best practice, ethical conduct and skills development within the field.
