Port Of Ngqura

The Port of Ngqura is a deep-water port facility located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) within the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area. Commissioned in 2009, it is one of the newest and most modern ports in Africa, designed to handle containerised cargo, automotive exports and bulk commodities. The port is operated by Transnet Port Terminals, the port-operating division of the state-owned freight logistics group Transnet. Ngqura features a 16-metre-deep natural harbour, making it the deepest container terminal in sub-Saharan Africa and capable of accommodating the largest container vessels in operation. The facility includes a dedicated container terminal with ship-to-shore gantry cranes, a multipurpose terminal, and a manganese export terminal that handles ore from the Northern Cape. Its strategic location along major international shipping routes positions it as a key transhipment hub for cargo moving between Asia, Europe and the Americas. The port plays an important role in South Africa's export economy, particularly for automotive products manufactured in the Eastern Cape and mineral commodities. Ngqura forms part of the Coega Industrial Development Zone, an integrated economic development initiative aimed at attracting investment and creating employment in the region. The port's development represented a multibillion-rand infrastructure investment and continues to undergo phased expansion to increase capacity and diversify the cargo types handled.
