Port Of Maputo

Port Of Maputo is a major seaport facility located in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, on the Indian Ocean coast of southern Africa. The port serves as a critical gateway for trade in the region, handling cargo for Mozambique as well as landlocked neighbouring countries including South Africa, Eswatini and Zimbabwe. It comprises several terminals, including container, general cargo, bulk cargo and mineral handling facilities, with deep-water berths capable of accommodating large vessels. The port is operated by Maputo Port Development Company, a public-private partnership that includes the Mozambique government, DP World and Grindrod among its stakeholders. Port Of Maputo has a strategic location on the Maputo Bay, offering shorter shipping routes to South Africa's industrial heartland compared with other regional ports. The facility handles significant volumes of coal, ferrochrome, magnetite and other minerals destined for export, as well as containerised goods and general cargo imports. Annual throughput has grown substantially in recent decades, supported by infrastructure upgrades and expansion projects aimed at increasing capacity and efficiency. The port plays a vital role in Mozambique's economy, generating revenue, employment and serving as a key enabler of regional trade integration. It was originally developed during the Portuguese colonial era and has undergone successive phases of modernisation and expansion since Mozambique's independence in 1975.

Grindrod reports 30% cargo volume increase, weather disruptions ease

Logistics group Grindrod says favourable operating conditions at the Port of Maputo resulted in a 30% increase in cargo volumes during the five months ended May 2026, though performance at its Terminal de Carvão da Matola slowed 8% owing to adverse weather in the Phalaborwa region between January and February. CEO Kwazi Mabaso says the company expects improved performance in the second half of the year as weather-related disruptions ease and rail capacity recovers, supported by the reopening of the Chikwalakwala line in May.

Rerouted trade boosts Maputo traffic amid Middle East conflict

Rerouted transport is increasing traffic through the Port of Maputo, Durban, Walvis Bay and Mauritius as the Middle East conflict disrupts shipping routes, according to a report by two UN agencies, the African Union and the African Development Bank. The report warns African economies could lose 0.2 percentage points of GDP growth in 2026 if the conflict lasts more than six months, with prolonged disruption to trade, energy and fertiliser supplies threatening the continent.
