Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelagic country in South-East Asia, located in the western Pacific Ocean. Its capital is Manila, and the country comprises more than 7 600 islands, with a population of about 115-million people. The Philippine economy is one of the emerging markets in the region, with key sectors including electronics manufacturing, business process outsourcing, agriculture, mining and tourism. The country is rich in mineral resources, including gold, copper, nickel and chromite, making mining a significant contributor to export earnings. The currency is the Philippine peso. The Philippines operates as a presidential republic with a bicameral legislature. It is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the World Trade Organization. The country has a mixed economic record, balancing rapid urbanisation and industrial growth with challenges in infrastructure development and income inequality. The Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946, following centuries of Spanish colonial rule and a period of American administration after 1898.
