Peru

Peru is a country located on the western coast of South America, bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the south-east and Chile to the south, with the Pacific Ocean forming its western boundary. The capital and largest city is Lima, situated on the central coast. Peru has a population of about 34-million people and operates as a presidential republic with a multiparty democratic system. The economy is one of the most dynamic in Latin America, driven by mining, agriculture, fishing and manufacturing. Peru is one of the world's leading producers of copper, silver, gold and zinc, and the mining sector accounts for a significant share of export earnings and government revenue. The country is also a major exporter of fishmeal, asparagus, coffee, cocoa and fresh fruit. The official currency is the sol, which has maintained relative stability against major currencies. Peru is a member of the Pacific Alliance, the Andean Community, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and the United Nations. The country has pursued market-oriented economic policies since the 1990s, attracting substantial foreign investment in mining, energy and infrastructure. Peru's diverse geography ranges from the arid coastal plains through the Andes mountain range to the Amazon rainforest in the east, each region contributing distinct resources and economic activities. The nation has a rich cultural heritage rooted in the Inca civilisation and Spanish colonial history, which continues to shape its social and political landscape.
