Palm Oil

Palm oil is a versatile edible vegetable oil derived from the fruit of oil palm trees, primarily the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is the most widely produced and consumed vegetable oil globally, accounting for about one-third of total vegetable oil production worldwide. The oil is extracted from both the fleshy fruit (crude palm oil) and the kernel (palm kernel oil), with each yielding oils of different compositions and applications. Palm oil is used extensively in food manufacturing, appearing in products ranging from margarine and baked goods to instant noodles and chocolate, as well as in non-food applications including cosmetics, soaps, detergents and biofuels. The crop is grown predominantly in tropical regions, with Indonesia and Malaysia together producing approximately 85% of the world's supply, while significant production also occurs in Thailand, Colombia, Nigeria and other equatorial countries. Palm oil's high yield per hectare compared with other oil crops makes it economically attractive, but its cultivation has been associated with deforestation, habitat loss and biodiversity concerns, particularly in South-East Asia. International sustainability certification schemes such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil have emerged to address environmental and social impacts. Global palm oil prices are influenced by production cycles, weather patterns affecting yields, competing vegetable oil markets, biofuel demand and policy, and currency fluctuations in major producing countries. The commodity is traded on exchanges including the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives and features prominently in agricultural commodity indices, with price movements closely watched by food manufacturers, traders and policymakers concerned with food security and inflation.
