Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a Central American country bordered by Honduras to the north, Costa Rica to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The capital is Managua. With a population of about 6.5-million, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America by area but one of the least densely populated. The economy is based on agriculture, mining, manufacturing and services, with key exports including coffee, beef, gold, textiles and sugar. The currency is the córdoba. Nicaragua operates under a presidential republic system of government, though its political landscape has been marked by periods of instability and authoritarian governance. The country is a member of the Central American Integration System and the Central American Parliament. Nicaragua's mining sector has attracted international investment, particularly in gold extraction, with operations concentrated in the northern highlands. The country gained independence from Spain in 1821 and has experienced significant political upheaval, including the Sandinista revolution of 1979 and subsequent civil conflict in the 1980s.
