Necsa

Necsa (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation) is a South African state-owned entity responsible for nuclear research, development and the commercial exploitation of nuclear technology. The corporation is headquartered at Pelindaba, near Pretoria, and operates under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Necsa's core activities include the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications through its subsidiary NTP Radioisotopes, fluorochemical production via Pelchem, and nuclear fuel cycle services. The organisation operates the SAFARI-1 research reactor, one of the world's leading producers of medical isotopes. Necsa plays a central role in South Africa's nuclear energy strategy, including research into advanced reactor technologies such as small modular reactors and the pebble bed modular reactor concept. The corporation provides technical support and expertise to Eskom's Koeberg nuclear power station and engages in international nuclear cooperation with countries including China, Russia, Egypt and France. Necsa also conducts research into nuclear applications beyond electricity generation, including hydrogen production and desalination. The entity is regulated by the National Nuclear Regulator and reports to Parliament through the relevant minister. Necsa was established in 1999 as the successor to the Atomic Energy Corporation, consolidating South Africa's civilian nuclear research and commercial activities under a single entity.
