Natref

Natref is an oil refinery located in Sasolburg, Free State province, South Africa. The facility is a joint venture between Sasol and TotalEnergies, with each company holding a 50% stake. Natref has a nameplate refining capacity of approximately 108 000 barrels a day, making it one of the largest crude oil refineries in South Africa. The refinery processes imported crude oil into a range of petroleum products including petrol, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas and other refined products for the domestic market. Natref is strategically positioned near Sasol's coal-to-liquids operations in Secunda and is connected to South Africa's inland fuel distribution network. The facility plays a significant role in the country's energy security and fuel supply chain, particularly for Gauteng and the inland provinces. Natref has undergone various upgrades and maintenance programmes over the decades to improve efficiency, environmental performance and product quality. The refinery's operations are subject to South African environmental and safety regulations, and it has faced periodic shutdowns for planned maintenance and unplanned technical issues. Natref was commissioned in the 1970s as part of South Africa's strategy to secure domestic fuel supply during the apartheid-era sanctions period.
