Mongolia

Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. The capital is Ulaanbaatar. With a population of about 3.3-million spread across 1.6-million square kilometres, it is one of the world's most sparsely populated nations. Mongolia's economy is heavily dependent on mining and agriculture, with mineral exports accounting for the majority of foreign earnings. The country possesses vast reserves of copper, coal, gold, molybdenum, fluorspar, uranium and iron-ore, making it a significant destination for international mining investment. Major mining projects include the Oyu Tolgoi copper–gold mine in the South Gobi desert, operated by Rio Tinto, and the Tavan Tolgoi coalfields. The currency is the tögrög. Mongolia is a parliamentary republic and a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Since the transition from a Soviet-aligned socialist state to a market economy in the early 1990s, Mongolia has sought to balance its economic relationships between its two large neighbours while attracting foreign direct investment in its resource sector.
