Mogale City

Mogale City is a local municipality in Gauteng province, South Africa. It is situated in the West Rand district, approximately 40 kilometres west of Johannesburg. The municipality was established in 2000 following the amalgamation of several former local authorities, including Krugersdorp, Randfontein and Westonaria. Mogale City has a population of approximately 360 000 people. The area has a rich gold-mining heritage and was historically one of the most productive gold-mining regions in South Africa, forming part of the Witwatersrand gold belt. Although large-scale underground mining has declined, the municipality remains economically significant for gold tailings retreatment operations, which reprocess historical mine dumps to extract residual gold. Other economic activities include manufacturing, agriculture and services. The municipality is named after Mogale, a leader of the Kwena people who lived in the area during the nineteenth century. Key towns within Mogale City include Krugersdorp, the administrative seat, as well as Kagiso, Magaliesburg and Muldersdrift. The municipality's proximity to Johannesburg and its transport links make it an important industrial and residential hub in Gauteng.
