Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine and Mintek have successfully produced high-purity mixed rare earth products at laboratory scale, positioning South Africa as the first African country to produce rare earth products through a mining company and national research institution partnership. Construction of the Phase 1 metallurgical processing plant is under way with commissioning scheduled for August and first concentrate shipments anticipated before the end of this year, while London-listed Cobra Resources has confirmed favourable rare earth assay results at its Boland and Head prospects in South Australia, where 3 200 m of drilling supports a mineral resource estimate for unique controlled aquifer-hosted ionic rare earth mineralisation amenable to low-cost in-situ recovery.

The company plans to produce at least 61 000 t of lithium this year and is opening mines in Argentina and Canada designed to remain economical should prices drop again, with direct lithium extraction projects expected to launch within a few years.
