Midrand

Midrand is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria along the N1 highway. It forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and lies roughly equidistant from the two major urban centres, approximately 25 kilometres from each. The city has evolved from a small farming community into a significant commercial and industrial hub since the 1980s. Midrand is home to numerous corporate headquarters, business parks, and technology companies, making it an important node in Gauteng's economic landscape. The area hosts major facilities including the Gallagher Convention Centre, one of southern Africa's largest exhibition and conference venues, as well as the Waterfall City mixed-use development. Its strategic location along key transport corridors has driven substantial growth in logistics, warehousing, and distribution operations. The population has expanded rapidly over recent decades as residential estates and commercial developments have proliferated. Midrand's economy is anchored by sectors including information technology, telecommunications, manufacturing, and business services. The city benefits from proximity to OR Tambo International Airport and the Gautrain rapid rail network, enhancing its connectivity and appeal to investors. Midrand was formally established as a municipality in 1981 and was incorporated into the expanded City of Johannesburg in 2000 as part of South Africa's municipal restructuring.
