Merafe Resources

Merafe Resources is a South African mining company focused on ferrochrome production and chrome ore beneficiation. The company is headquartered in Johannesburg and is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Merafe is best known as the black economic empowerment partner in the Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture, a joint venture with Glencore that operates one of the world's largest ferrochrome production facilities. Through this venture, Merafe holds a 20.5% stake in the Lion Ferrochrome smelting operations and associated chrome mines in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. The venture produces ferrochrome, a key input for stainless steel manufacturing, and processes chrome ore from several mining operations. Merafe's business model centres on its participation in this strategic partnership, which gives it exposure to the global ferrochrome and stainless steel markets. The company's financial performance is closely tied to ferrochrome prices, chrome ore supply, and operational efficiency at the venture's smelters. Merafe was established in 2004 as part of South Africa's mining transformation agenda and has since become a significant player in the country's chrome and ferrochrome sector.
