Manitoba

Manitoba is a province in central Canada, bordered by Ontario to the east, Saskatchewan to the west, Nunavut to the north and the US states of North Dakota and Minnesota to the south. The provincial capital is Winnipeg, which is also Manitoba's largest city and economic centre. Manitoba has a population of about 1.4-million people and an economy historically rooted in agriculture, mining and hydroelectric power generation. The province is a significant producer of nickel, copper, zinc and gold, with mining concentrated in the northern regions around Thompson and Flin Flon. Agriculture remains important in the southern prairies, where wheat, canola and livestock farming dominate. Manitoba's extensive river systems, including the Nelson and Churchill rivers, support substantial hydroelectric capacity, making the province a net exporter of electricity. The province is governed by a unicameral Legislative Assembly and is part of the Canadian Confederation. Manitoba joined Confederation in 1870, becoming Canada's fifth province following the Red River Rebellion and negotiations led by the Métis leader Louis Riel. The province's name is believed to derive from the Cree or Ojibwe words for the narrows of Lake Manitoba, which early Indigenous peoples considered the strait of Manitou, the Great Spirit.
