Mangaung

Mangaung is a metropolitan municipality in the Free State province of South Africa, with Bloemfontein serving as its administrative capital. The municipality is one of eight metropolitan municipalities in South Africa and encompasses the cities of Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu. Mangaung has a population of approximately 750 000 people and serves as the judicial capital of South Africa, hosting the Supreme Court of Appeal. The metropolitan area is an important economic and administrative hub in the central interior of the country, with key sectors including government services, education, healthcare, agriculture and tourism. The municipality is home to significant infrastructure including Bram Fischer International Airport, which connects the region to major South African cities. Mangaung's economy benefits from its role as the provincial capital and its position as a centre for tertiary education, with several universities and colleges located in the area. The metropolitan municipality was established in 2000 as part of South Africa's post-apartheid local government restructuring, consolidating previously separate administrations. Job creation, skills development and economic diversification remain central priorities for the municipality's development agenda.
