London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange is one of the world's oldest and largest stock exchanges, operating equity, bond and derivatives markets for domestic and international issuers. Headquartered in the City of London, it traces its origins to informal trading in coffeehouses in the seventeenth century and was formally established in 1801. The exchange is the primary listing venue for many of the United Kingdom's largest companies and attracts international listings, particularly from mining, energy and financial services groups. It operates multiple markets, including the Main Market for established companies and the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) for smaller and growth-oriented businesses. The London Stock Exchange is part of London Stock Exchange Group, which also owns clearing house LCH, index provider FTSE Russell and data and analytics businesses. The Main Market is divided into the Premium and Standard listing segments, with Premium listings subject to the UK's super-equivalent corporate governance and disclosure standards. The exchange's benchmark FTSE 100 index tracks the 100 largest companies by market capitalisation and is a widely followed barometer of UK economic performance. Trading is conducted electronically through the exchange's order book and quote-driven systems. The London Stock Exchange competes globally with exchanges in New York, Hong Kong and other financial centres for capital raising and liquidity. It is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and operates under the oversight of the UK Takeover Panel for mergers and acquisitions involving listed companies.
