Libya

Libya is a country in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the south-east, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The capital is Tripoli, located on the Mediterranean coast. With a population of about seven-million spread across 1.8-million square kilometres, Libya is the fourth-largest country in Africa by area but remains sparsely populated, with much of its territory covered by the Sahara Desert. The economy is heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, which account for the vast majority of government revenue and export earnings. Libya's currency is the Libyan dinar. Since the 2011 uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi's four-decade rule, the country has experienced prolonged political instability, with rival administrations and armed groups vying for control. Libya is a member of the African Union, the Arab League and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The ongoing conflict has severely disrupted oil production, displaced populations and created humanitarian challenges, drawing international attention and intervention. Efforts by the United Nations, the African Union and regional actors continue in pursuit of a unified government and lasting peace.
