Lebanon

Lebanon is a country in the Middle East, bordered by Syria to the north and east, Israel to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Its capital and largest city is Beirut. The country has a population of approximately six-million people and operates under a confessional parliamentary republic system, where political power is distributed among religious communities. Lebanon's economy historically relied on banking, tourism and services, though it has faced severe economic crisis since 2019, with currency collapse, banking sector failure and widespread poverty. The Lebanese pound is the national currency. Lebanon is a member of the United Nations and the Arab League. The country has a complex sectarian political structure, with power shared among Christian, Sunni Muslim, Shia Muslim and Druze communities under the National Pact arrangement established after independence. Lebanon gained independence from France in 1943, endured a civil war from 1975 to 1990, and has experienced recurring conflict with Israel, including a major war in 2006 and escalated hostilities involving Hezbollah. The country hosts a large number of Syrian and Palestinian refugees, placing additional strain on its infrastructure and economy.
