Knysna

Knysna is a coastal town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, situated along the Garden Route between George and Plettenberg Bay. The town lies on the shores of a large estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon, which is fed by the Knysna River and opens to the Indian Ocean through a narrow channel flanked by two sandstone cliffs called the Heads. Knysna has a population of about 76 000 people and serves as the administrative centre of the Knysna Local Municipality. The town's economy is driven primarily by tourism, forestry, agriculture and light manufacturing, with visitors drawn to its natural beauty, outdoor activities and artisanal food and craft industries. Knysna is renowned for its indigenous forests, particularly the Knysna Forest, which historically supported a timber industry and remains home to a small population of forest elephants. The town hosts the annual Knysna Oyster Festival, a major sporting and culinary event that attracts thousands of participants and spectators each July. In June 2017, Knysna was severely affected by wildfires that destroyed more than 1 000 structures and displaced thousands of residents, highlighting the area's vulnerability to climate-related hazards. The town's scenic lagoon, mild climate and proximity to beaches, forests and mountains have made it a popular retirement and holiday destination. Knysna's name is derived from a Khoisan word believed to mean 'ferns' or 'hard to reach', reflecting the area's lush vegetation and once-remote location. The town was founded in the early nineteenth century and grew around timber extraction, shipbuilding and trade through its natural harbour.
