King Shaka International Airport

King Shaka International Airport is the primary international airport serving Durban and the broader KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. The facility is located at La Mercy, approximately 35 km north of Durban's city centre. It is operated by Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), the state-owned enterprise responsible for managing South Africa's principal airports. The airport serves as a key gateway for both domestic and international passengers travelling to the province, supporting tourism, business and cargo operations. King Shaka handles several million passengers annually and features a single terminal building designed to accommodate growth in air traffic. The facility includes runways capable of handling large wide-body aircraft, as well as cargo and general aviation infrastructure. Its strategic location supports KwaZulu-Natal's role as an economic hub and tourist destination, with connections to major African, Middle Eastern and international cities. The airport opened in May 2010, replacing the former Durban International Airport ahead of South Africa's hosting of the FIFA World Cup. It is named after King Shaka, the nineteenth-century Zulu monarch who founded the Zulu Kingdom.
