Khayelitsha

Khayelitsha is a township located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, situated on the Cape Flats approximately 30 km south-east of Cape Town's city centre. It is one of the largest and fastest-growing townships in South Africa, with an estimated population exceeding 400 000 residents, though informal settlement growth makes precise figures difficult to establish. The name Khayelitsha means "new home" in isiXhosa, reflecting its origins as a planned township established in the mid-1980s during the apartheid era to accommodate the growing black African population of Cape Town. The township is characterised by a mix of formal housing, informal settlements and government-subsidised housing developments. Khayelitsha faces significant socioeconomic challenges, including high unemployment rates, poverty and crime, which have made it a focal point for community safety initiatives and government intervention programmes. The area's economy is driven primarily by informal trading, small businesses and service industries, with many residents commuting to Cape Town for employment. Infrastructure development has been ongoing, with improvements to roads, public transport links, health facilities and schools, though service delivery remains a contentious issue. Khayelitsha is also home to a vibrant community with active civic organisations, cultural initiatives and entrepreneurial activity. The township continues to play a significant role in discussions around urban planning, housing policy and economic development in the Western Cape.
