Itochu

Itochu is a Japanese multinational trading and investment conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo. The company operates across a diverse range of sectors including textiles, machinery, metals, minerals, energy, chemicals, food, information and communications technology, real estate and financial services. Itochu is one of Japan's largest sōgō shōsha, or general trading companies, a business model that combines trading, investment and project development across multiple industries and geographies. The company has a significant presence in natural resources, with investments in mining, oil and gas projects around the world. In the minerals sector, Itochu has developed strategic partnerships and joint ventures in platinum-group metals, base metals and other commodities. The conglomerate's business model emphasises long-term partnerships and integrated supply chains, often taking equity stakes in upstream production assets to secure supply for downstream customers in Japan and other markets. Itochu is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and is one of the five major Japanese trading houses alongside Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co, Sumitomo Corporation and Marubeni. The company was founded in 1858 as a textile trader and has since evolved into a global enterprise with operations in more than 60 countries. Itochu's involvement in African mining projects reflects Japan's broader strategy to secure stable supplies of critical minerals and metals for its manufacturing industries.
