Ireland

Ireland is a country located in north-western Europe, occupying most of the island of Ireland in the North Atlantic Ocean. The capital and largest city is Dublin. With a population of about five-million people, Ireland has a modern, knowledge-based economy driven by pharmaceuticals, medical devices, information technology, financial services and agribusiness. The country uses the euro as its currency and is a member of the European Union, having joined in 1973. Ireland operates as a parliamentary democracy with a president as head of state and a Taoiseach (prime minister) as head of government. The economy has attracted significant foreign direct investment owing to its low corporate tax rate, skilled workforce and access to EU markets. Key exports include pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, medical and optical instruments, and computer services. Ireland is also a member of the United Nations, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Trade Organization. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1922, with the Irish Free State later becoming the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
