International Telecommunication Union

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the United Nations specialised agency responsible for information and communication technologies. Established in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, it is the oldest global international organisation and was reconstituted in its current form in 1947 when it became a UN agency. The ITU's mandate covers the allocation of global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, the development of technical standards to ensure seamless interconnection of communications systems worldwide, and efforts to improve ICT infrastructure and access in developing countries. The organisation is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and comprises 193 member states plus some 900 companies, universities and international organisations as sector members. The ITU operates through three main sectors: Radiocommunication (ITU-R), which manages spectrum and satellite resources; Standardization (ITU-T), which develops technical standards; and Development (ITU-D), which promotes ICT access and digital inclusion in underserved regions. The agency plays a central role in coordinating international telecommunications policy, facilitating cross-border connectivity and supporting capacity-building programmes, particularly in Africa and other developing regions. The ITU convenes major global conferences and working groups to address emerging issues such as 5G deployment, cybersecurity, Internet governance and bridging the digital divide. Its work underpins the global telecommunications infrastructure and supports efforts to extend connectivity to the billions of people still without internet access.
