Hydrogen South Africa

Hydrogen South Africa is an industry body established to promote the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies and infrastructure across South Africa. The organisation serves as a platform for collaboration among government, industry, research institutions and international partners to advance the country's hydrogen economy. Hydrogen South Africa's mandate includes advocating for supportive policy frameworks, facilitating investment in hydrogen projects, and coordinating research and development initiatives in hydrogen production, storage, distribution and end-use applications such as fuel cells and industrial processes. The organisation operates within South Africa's broader energy transition and decarbonisation agenda, positioning hydrogen as a key enabler for reducing carbon emissions in hard-to-abate sectors including heavy transport, mining, chemicals and steel production. Membership includes major energy companies, automotive manufacturers, technology providers, platinum producers and government agencies, reflecting the cross-sectoral nature of the hydrogen value chain. Hydrogen South Africa engages with international hydrogen initiatives and bilateral partnerships, particularly with countries such as Japan and Germany that have established hydrogen strategies. The organisation also supports skills development and public awareness programmes to build domestic capacity in hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen South Africa was established in the early 2020s as South Africa began to articulate its hydrogen roadmap, leveraging the country's abundant renewable energy resources and platinum-group metals reserves for fuel-cell catalysts.
