Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated within the Midvaal local municipality. The city lies approximately 50 kilometres south-east of Johannesburg along the N3 highway corridor linking Gauteng with KwaZulu-Natal. Heidelberg serves as an important commercial and agricultural centre for the surrounding Suikerbosrand region, with a mixed economy historically rooted in grain farming, livestock and light manufacturing. The city has gained strategic significance as part of the Vaal Special Economic Zone development initiative, which aims to attract investment and create employment in southern Gauteng. Its location along major transport routes and proximity to both Johannesburg and the Vaal Triangle industrial area positions Heidelberg as a logistics and distribution node. The city's infrastructure includes rail connections and road access to key economic hubs, making it attractive for warehousing and manufacturing operations. Heidelberg has experienced renewed attention from provincial government and private investors seeking to leverage special economic zone incentives for industrial expansion. The city was established in the nineteenth century during the South African Republic era and retains historical architecture from that period alongside modern commercial development.
