Haiti

Haiti is a Caribbean nation occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. The capital is Port-au-Prince. With a population of about 11-million, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, facing chronic political instability, weak governance and severe economic challenges. The economy relies heavily on subsistence agriculture, remittances from the diaspora and limited manufacturing, particularly textiles. Haiti's currency is the gourde. The country operates as a semi-presidential republic, though governance has been repeatedly disrupted by coups, gang violence and natural disasters. Haiti is a member of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the Organisation of American States and the United Nations. The nation gained independence from France in 1804 following a successful slave revolt, becoming the first Black republic and the second independent nation in the Americas. A devastating earthquake in 2010 killed more than 200 000 people and set back development for years, while political assassinations, including that of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, have deepened instability. Gang control over large parts of Port-au-Prince has driven mass displacement and humanitarian crises, prompting international intervention debates and migration flows to neighbouring countries and the United States.
