Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is a small West African country bordered by Senegal to the north, Guinea to the south and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The capital and largest city is Bissau. The country has a population of about two-million people and one of the smallest economies in the world, with a gross domestic product heavily dependent on agriculture, particularly cashew nut production. Guinea-Bissau is among the world's leading cashew exporters, with the crop accounting for the majority of export earnings. The currency is the West African CFA franc, shared with several other countries in the region. The government is a semi-presidential republic, though the country has experienced significant political instability since independence, including multiple coups and attempted coups. Guinea-Bissau is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The country gained independence from Portugal in 1974 after a protracted armed struggle. Its economy remains fragile, with limited infrastructure and heavy reliance on international aid and remittances. Ongoing political volatility and weak institutions continue to constrain development and investment in the country.
