Guatemala

Guatemala is a Central American country bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast, Honduras to the east, El Salvador to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Guatemala City. With a population of approximately 18 million, Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America. The economy is based on agriculture, textiles, tourism and remittances, with coffee, sugar, bananas and cardamom among the principal exports. The currency is the quetzal. Guatemala is a presidential republic with a multi-party system. The country is a member of the Central American Integration System, the Organisation of American States and the United Nations. Guatemala has significant indigenous Maya populations and Spanish is the official language. The nation gained independence from Spain in 1821 and has experienced periods of political instability, including a 36-year civil war that ended in 1996. Guatemala faces ongoing challenges related to poverty, inequality, crime and migration, with significant numbers of Guatemalans seeking economic opportunities abroad, particularly in the United States and Mexico.
