Grindrod

Grindrod is a South African freight services and financial services group with operations across sub-Saharan Africa and internationally. The company is headquartered in Durban, South Africa, and is listed on the JSE Securities Exchange. Grindrod operates through several divisions, including port and terminals, shipping, logistics and financial services, providing integrated supply-chain solutions for bulk commodities, containers and breakbulk cargo. The group owns and operates port terminals, dry bulk shipping vessels, rail and road freight services, and cargo-handling facilities in multiple African countries. Grindrod has a significant presence in Mozambique, where it holds interests in port terminal concessions including the Port of Maputo through the Maputo Port Development Company joint venture. The company also provides banking and financial services through Grindrod Bank, which focuses on trade and commodity finance. Grindrod's shipping division operates a fleet of dry bulk carriers and tankers serving global trade routes. The group has undergone strategic restructuring in recent years, divesting non-core assets to focus on its freight logistics and financial services businesses. Grindrod was founded in 1910 as a shipping agency and has evolved into a diversified freight and logistics group with a strong footprint in African port and rail infrastructure.

Grindrod expects second-half recovery as Maputo volumes rise, weather disruptions ease

Logistics group Grindrod says it expects improved performance in the second half of the year as weather-related disruptions ease and rail capacity recovers. CEO Kwazi Mabaso reports that favourable conditions at the Port of Maputo drove a 30% increase in cargo volumes during the five months ended May, though performance at the company's Terminal de Carvão da Matola slowed by 8% owing to adverse weather in the Phalaborwa region between January and February that affected magnetite sourcing.

Rail access agreement signed, operations targeted for 2027

Grindrod has signed a rail access agreement with the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager, formally enabling its participation in South Africa's Open Access Rail initiative. The company expects to start operations in 2027, initially transporting 288 000 t of material using two allocated slots on the North–East Corridor between Mpumalanga and Maputo, with plans to progressively increase volumes to 432 000 t a year subject to additional slot allocations.

Matola expansion on track, Richards Bay partnership pursued

Grindrod's expansion project at the Matola dry-bulk terminal in Maputo remains on track for hot commissioning in the first quarter of 2027, which will lift terminal capacity to 12-million tonnes a year. The company is also pursuing a presence at the Richards Bay port container handling facility, expected to be commissioned in 2028, and has indicated it will participate in Transnet's request for qualification to identify private sector partners for the Richards Bay dry-bulk terminal.
