Goma

Goma is the capital of North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The city sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, directly on the border with Rwanda, and has a population of approximately one million people. Goma serves as a major commercial and humanitarian hub in the eastern DRC, despite its location in a region marked by recurring conflict and volcanic activity. The city lies at the foot of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano that last erupted in 2021, destroying parts of the urban area and displacing tens of thousands of residents. Goma's economy is driven by cross-border trade with Rwanda, small-scale commerce, and the presence of numerous international aid organisations and United Nations peacekeeping operations. The city has been at the centre of regional instability for decades, frequently affected by armed groups including M23 and other militias operating in North Kivu. Its strategic position on the Rwandan border makes it a focal point for diplomatic and military tensions in the Great Lakes region. Goma is also home to a regional airport and serves as a logistics base for humanitarian operations across eastern DRC. The city's infrastructure remains underdeveloped, with limited access to electricity, clean water and paved roads, challenges compounded by rapid population growth driven by internal displacement.
