General Motors

General Motors is an American multinational automotive manufacturer that designs, builds and sells cars, trucks and automotive parts. The company is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, and operates manufacturing and assembly plants across North America, South America, Asia and other global markets. General Motors is a publicly listed company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol GM. Its core brands include Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick, serving mass-market, premium and luxury segments. The company ranks among the world's largest automakers by vehicle sales and revenue, competing globally with manufacturers such as Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford. General Motors employs more than 160 000 people worldwide and generates annual revenue exceeding $150-billion. The company has committed substantial investment to electric-vehicle development and battery technology as part of its transition away from internal-combustion engines, targeting an all-electric future by 2035. Key subsidiaries include GM Financial, which provides automotive financing, and Cruise, its autonomous-vehicle division. General Motors was founded in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, by William C Durant, and emerged from bankruptcy restructuring in 2009 with US government support during the global financial crisis.

General Motors secures rare earth supply through Pensana partnership

London-listed Pensana has engaged General Motors as part of a multi-partner offtake framework for its $250-million Longonjo rare earth mine in Angola, which is 22% complete and on target for first commissioning in 2027. The mine-to-magnet strategy includes partnerships with Toyota Tsusho, ReElement Technologies and VAC/eVAC Magnetics, alongside Japanese magnet producers and automotive original-equipment manufacturers in Europe and the US.

GM backs lithium and rare earth projects to secure battery supply chain

General Motors holds a 38% stake in the Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada, which is progressing towards mechanical completion in late 2027 with capital expenditure guidance of $1.3-billion to $1.6-billion for 2026. The carmaker has also invested in EnergyX, a Puerto Rico-based lithium technology startup building a $1.1-billion facility in Chile slated to produce 50 000 t/y by 2028, and has signed a magnet supply deal with MP Materials, which is developing a rare earths refinery in Saudi Arabia with the US Department of Defense.
