South Africa is poised to delay the retirement of about a fifth of its coal-fired electricity-generation capacity as gas projects earmarked to replace them remain behind schedule. A wait of around five years for gas turbines from suppliers such as Siemens and General Electric means Eskom will already miss the deadline to shut 8 GW of coal-fired capacity by 2030, according to Bheki Nxumalo, the utility's head of generation.
General Electric supplies turbine equipment for nuclear projects in Türkiye and EgyptGE Steam Power and AEM Technology, a joint venture between AtomEnergoMash and General Electric, is supplying equipment and systems for the conventional island at Türkiye's Akkuyu nuclear power plant, where the turbine generator stator for Unit 2 was installed in January 2026. Atomenergomash and General Electric are also supplying turbine hall equipment for Egypt's El-Dabaa nuclear power plant, which expects to reach full capacity in 2030.
