Gauteng Provincial Government

Gauteng Provincial Government is the executive authority responsible for governing Gauteng province in South Africa. It administers the country's smallest but most economically significant province, which encompasses Johannesburg, Pretoria and the industrial heartland of the Witwatersrand. The provincial government operates under South Africa's three-tier system of national, provincial and local government established by the 1996 Constitution. It holds concurrent and exclusive competencies over areas including health, education, housing, transport, agriculture and economic development within provincial boundaries. The executive is led by a premier elected by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, supported by a cabinet of members of the executive council who head various departments. Gauteng contributes more than a third of South Africa's gross domestic product, making the provincial government a key player in national economic policy and infrastructure delivery. Major responsibilities include managing provincial hospitals and clinics, schools, roads, public transport systems and social development programmes. The government also coordinates spatial planning, environmental management and investment promotion across the province's three metropolitan municipalities and two district municipalities. Since the advent of democracy in 1994, the province has been governed continuously by the African National Congress, though with shifting majorities. Gauteng Provincial Government's decisions on infrastructure investment, service delivery and economic policy have national implications given the province's role as the economic engine of South Africa and the broader southern African region.
