Fuel

Fuel is a substance that stores energy in chemical form and releases it through combustion or other reactions to power engines, generate electricity, or produce heat. In the context of transport and industry, fuel typically refers to petroleum-based products such as petrol, diesel and jet fuel, though the term also encompasses coal, natural gas, biofuels and other energy carriers. Fuel is a critical input across multiple sectors of the economy, including road freight, rail, agriculture, manufacturing and fishing, where it powers vehicles, machinery and equipment. The cost of fuel represents a significant operating expense for businesses in these sectors, particularly for logistics companies and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with tight margins. Fuel prices are influenced by global crude oil markets, refining capacity, exchange rates, government taxes and levies, and geopolitical factors. In South Africa, fuel prices are regulated and adjusted monthly based on a formula that accounts for international petroleum prices, the rand–dollar exchange rate, and statutory levies. Fluctuations in fuel costs can have wide-ranging economic impacts, affecting inflation, consumer spending, business profitability and competitiveness. Governments and industry bodies such as Business Unity South Africa monitor fuel pricing closely due to its significance for economic stability and growth. The transition to alternative fuels and renewable energy sources is an ongoing theme in policy discussions, driven by environmental concerns and energy security considerations.
