FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is the premier international football tournament, held every four years and organised by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The competition brings together national teams from across the globe, with 32 countries competing in the final tournament as of the 2022 edition, expanding to 48 teams from 2026. Qualification rounds span several years and involve hundreds of nations from FIFA's six continental confederations. The tournament typically runs for about a month, with matches hosted across multiple cities in the selected host nation or nations. The World Cup is one of the most-watched sporting events globally, attracting billions of television viewers and generating substantial economic activity through tourism, infrastructure development and commercial sponsorship. Host countries invest heavily in stadiums, transport networks and hospitality facilities to accommodate the influx of teams, officials, media and supporters. South Africa became the first African nation to host the tournament in 2010, staging matches in ten cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The event carries significant political and cultural symbolism, often serving as a platform for national pride and international diplomacy. The World Cup was first held in 1930 in Uruguay, with Brazil holding the record for the most titles. FIFA awards hosting rights through a bidding process that evaluates infrastructure, financial capacity and organisational capability.
