Festus Mogae

Festus Mogae is a Botswanan economist and statesman who served as the third President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008. He is a national of Botswana and was born in 1939 in Serowe. Mogae's path to the presidency began with his education in economics at the University of Oxford and the University of Sussex, followed by a distinguished career in public service. Before assuming the presidency, he held several key positions including Governor of the Bank of Botswana, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and Vice-President of Botswana from 1992 to 1998. His domain of influence spans economic policy, public health and democratic governance in southern Africa. During his presidency, Mogae is particularly noted for his leadership in confronting the HIV/AIDS epidemic, implementing one of Africa's most comprehensive antiretroviral treatment programmes and publicly addressing the crisis at a time when many African leaders remained silent. He maintained Botswana's reputation for economic stability, democratic governance and prudent management of diamond revenues. Mogae received the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008, recognising his exceptional leadership and voluntary departure from office. After leaving the presidency, he has remained active in international development, serving on various boards and advisory bodies focused on African governance, public health and economic development.
