Estonia

Estonia is a country in north-eastern Europe on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, bordered by Latvia to the south and Russia to the east. Its capital is Tallinn. With a population of about 1.3-million, Estonia is one of the smallest members of the European Union, which it joined in 2004 alongside its accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The economy is advanced and diversified, with strong information technology, telecommunications, manufacturing and services sectors. Estonia is widely recognised as a global leader in digital governance and e-government, having digitised most public services and introduced digital identity, e-residency and online voting systems. The country uses the euro as its currency and operates a parliamentary republic. Key exports include machinery, electronics, wood products and food, with trade heavily oriented towards the EU and Nordic markets. Estonia's strategic location and membership in regional blocs make it an important gateway between Western Europe and Russia. The technology sector has grown rapidly since independence, earning Tallinn a reputation as a hub for startups and innovation. Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 after decades of occupation, and has since pursued integration with Western institutions and a market-oriented economic model.
